The men's team of the CAB faced the formation of Galitos in the mid-final of the Portuguese Cup. The Friends won their place among the four best teams in the competition after having surpassed Lusitania. Galitos had to win the Third Basketball to get to the meeting, which opposed, as a curiosity, two teams that, in the previous journey of the Cup, measured forces with Azorean teams. The game began with the two teams displaying great defensive concerns. In addition, both Galitos and CAB demonstrated, in the first ten minutes, some disagreement with the basket, perhaps also the result of the great defensive intensity that the two clubs were in the field. Consequently, at the end of the first half, the result indicated a draw (10-10). In the second period, the teams mostly maintained the posture of the first part, with much attention to defensive aspects. In a way, it is possible to say that the teams showed that they had studied their opponent very well, because the game was not allowing any of them to ‘shoot’ on the scorer. Even so, the CAB showed some ascendant, which never translated into a very significant advantage. On the contrary, in the middle of the period, the result was 11-13, in favor of the Friends, and in the interval, the marker pointed 22-24, also in favor of the Madeirans. In the third period, the CAB met with the good outside game, converting three triples into just five minutes of play. However, on the other hand, Galitos also showed greater effectiveness, accompanying the Friends in their greatest achievement and leading to a draw (35-35) in the middle of the third half. From here, the CAB showed a better moment and gained a slight superiority (39-35), when only two minutes left to play. Notorious, on the CAB side, the central role of Fred Gentry, not only in defensive aspects, but also (and much) in offensive aspects, with practically all the game of Madeirans passing by the experienced player. In fairness, the Friends won the partial by 15-19 and reached the end of the period by 37-43. In the last time, the CAB got off better, and, with four minutes of play elapsed, the Friends led by 42-49, a result that mirrored fairly the best provision of Madeirans. However, from then on, the CAB proved to be less constant and balanced, which allowed Galitos to return to the game, placing the marker in 49-49, when there were still three and a half minutes to play. By the end of the meeting, the competition between the teams was constant, with none to yield on the marker. Proof of this is that, one minute from the end, the result was still a draw (53-53), with the decisions being reserved for the last sixty seconds. The dispute remained until the last twenty seconds, with the ball in possession of the CAB. From the free throw line, Fabio Lima and Diogo Gameiro placed the CAB to win by 55-58. However, in the last possession of the game's ball, after a great mess, Galitos managed to stall the game and lead the game to extension. In the extra time, Fred Gentry, who was being the "soul" of the CAB team, was excluded with five fouls when there were still two and a half minutes to play and the match was still tied (63-63). Moreover, to note that by that time, the match had already seen thirteen draws, a number that clearly indicates the balance felt throughout the duel between Madeirans and continentals. Until the end, the intensity remained the dominant score on both sides, however Galitos took better advantage of the opportunities he had and placed the game in 67-64, with twelve seconds to play. In response, a triple of Fábio Lima forced the tenth draw of the game, placed the result in 67-67 and took the match for a second extension. In the second prolonation, Fabio Lima and Stefan Djukic (how great it was!...) led a team full of determination and full of personality. In fact, the idea that remains at this stage of the meeting is that the CAB firmly refused defeat and bet everything on the passage to the final. Our boys were the size of your heart: ENORMOUS! With merit, with intelligence, with courage and with much, much desire, the team guided by João Paulo Silva 'carimbou' the passport for the final with a fair and very beautiful victory by 74-79. We couldn't be more proud!!!
