On May 22, a Sunday, CAB FAMILY will organize a walk to the Sardine Pier. It will be another event promoted by the Country Club, and interested parties must apply to the Club Secretariat. The walk will have an approximate length of four kilometres, with the route being taken in about two and a half hours. The trail is undulating, but is in good condition and allows you to observe the scenery of the east end of the island. The area to visit is classified as Partial Nature Reserve. The entire land area and the marine area adjacent to the North Coast, to the depth of 50 meters, are part of the European Network of Community Importance Sites - Natura 2000 Network. The semiarid climate and exposure to the north winds determine the development of the undergrowth and the absence of trees, differing from the rest of the island and constituting a true example of Natural Heritage. We can also find the basal floor of Madeira Island in better conservation, as well as several rare and endemic plants. Along the trail it is common to see several species of birds such as the Runways, the Pintassilgo, the Earth Canary and the Frenchman. In this place, they also nest protected seabirds such as Cagarra, Castro Roque, Black Soul and Common Garajau. At the end of the journey there is a building, Casa do Sardinha (family name of the former owners), supporting the vigilantes of the Madeira Natural Park service, responsible for the surveillance of this area. In this area, those interested can take a dip in the Sardinha Pier, and, on the horizon line, sight the Desert Islands to the south and the Islands of Porto Santo to the north. For the activity being organised by the club, the meeting place is the Pavilion, in which ‘walkers’ must meet at 8 a.m. Alternatively, you can choose the second meeting point, which is in Caniçal, at 9:00. Come take this walk with the CAB FAMILY!
